Julian Wilson Eliminates Slater in Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast
SNAPPER ROCKS, Australia (Sunday, March 8, 2009) – The first eight heats of Round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by LG Mobile were completed today in three-foot (1 metre) waves at Snapper Rocks, and wildcard Julian Wilson (AUS), 20, caused the upset of the season in eliminating reigning nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 37, from competition.
The opening event of the 2009 ASP World Tour season, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast commenced Round 3 action this afternoon following the completion of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast this morning, won by reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21.
Wilson, who is surfing in his third Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast as a wildcard, wasted no time in taking it to Slater in the last heat of the day, racking up a 6.83 out of a possible 10 to open up before sealing the deal with an 8.50 out of a possible 10.
“I’m over the moon right now,” Wilson said. “I was so nervous before that heat just thinking about what I could do to beat Kelly [Slater]. For so long, he has been unstoppable. I started the heat on the inside and got the first wave, which is what I wanted to do. It feels so good to beat him.”
Slater, who was riding an unconventional board that was shorter and wider than his usual equipment, never found a rhythm in the tricky afternoon conditions, and despite some mind-blowing, singular maneuvers, was never able to link together a complete wave.
„The waves I got were bad,” Slater said. “I surfed alright on one wave and I am frustrated obviously, but I would have had the same result with the best board of my life so it definitely wasn’t the equipment thing. A lot people want to put it down on that, but I am excited about my boards and I have a lot more fun riding these boards.“
While Wilson certainly held the most dramatic heat of the day, fellow Australians and Coolangatta kids Joel Parkinson (AUS), 27, and Mick Fanning (AUS), 27, shined at their home break, posting some of the highest scores of the season.
Parkinson, current ASP World No. 4 and former winner of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast (2002), posted the highest heat total of the day, and 18.50 out of a possible 20, for his unparalleled command of the Snapper Rocks lineup.
„I had that really positive vibe,” Parkinson said. “It’s so good to be surfing back at Snapper. I like this wave so much more and I think it shows in my performance.”
The stylish natural-footer was in particularly lethal form in his Round 3 heat, given that he was up against dangerous ASP Dream Tour sophomore Tiago Pires (PRT), 28.
“I always think a new year resets itself and everything starts fresh again,” Parkinson said. “Tiago (Pires) was honestly one of the most under-rated surfers last year. Hopefully he can get some strides and get some momentum for the rest of the year.“
Fanning, former ASP World Champion and two-time past winner of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast (2005, 2007), was another to decimate Snapper Rocks this afternoon, posting an excellent 18.10 out of a possible 20 to eliminate 2009 ASP World Tour rookie Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), 23.
When Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Round 3 action recommences, up first will be current ASP World No. 2 Bede Durbidge (AUS), 25, against replacement surfer Jay Thompson (AUS), 25.
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 6am for a possible 7am start.

abgesehen davon hat er gegen julian wilson verloren. ein 20 jähriger, der jetzt schon als möglicher slater ersatz gehandelt wird. nur weil er wildcard surfer ist, heisst das in diesem falle nix. gegen julian wilson hat jeder en problem.

Quiksilver Pro Semifinalists Decided in Pumping Coolangatta Beach
COOLANGATTA BEACH, Australia (Tuesday, March 10, 2009) – The Semifinalists of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by LG Mobile were decided today in pumping four-to-five foot (1.5 metre) waves at Coolangatta Beach.
The opening event of the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast utilized its third venue today, having used nearby Duranbah Beach for the opening rounds before returning the primary site of Snapper Rocks and finally to today’s Coolangatta Beach where the local boys dominated Round 4 and the Quarterfinals.
Mick Fanning (AUS), 27, former ASP World Champion and past two-time winner of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, was in devastating form this afternoon, defeating Damien Hobgood (USA), 29, in the Quarterfinals with the highest heat total of the day (an 18.53 out of a possible 20).
“It was a fun heat,” Fanning said. “I was lucky to get the jump on Damo [Damien Hobgood] at the start. I wanted to wait for a good opening wave and it came. On that 9.93, I went into it and saw it chandelier’ing so I reset my feet and just tried to hit it strong. It went all white and I was lucky it had an opening. It was pretty fun.”
Now into the Semifinals, Fanning will find himself battling Coolangatta stable mate Joel Parkinson (AUS), 27, for a spot in the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Final.
“Joel [Parkinson] and I have been great friends since we were little kids,” Fanning said. “It will be a really tough heat. We are always pushing each other. Sometimes it’s pretty and sometimes it’s ugly, but I’m definitely looking forward to it. I don’t really know what the conditions will be like tomorrow. All of the maps that I look at said it was going to be a lot bigger than we have seen today. It could be 100-foot or it could be two-foot.”
Parkinson, current ASP World No. 4 and past winner of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast (2002), was near unstoppable today at Coolangatta Beach, defeating Chris Davidson (AUS), 31, and C.J. Hobgood (USA), 29, in Round 4 and the Quarterfinals respectively.
“My Quarterfinal felt like it was a little bit bigger than my heat this morning – a lot more water moving,” Parkinson said. “My strategy stayed the same, but more effort was needed throughout the heat. It was hard to stay in position, the current out the back is so strong!”
Taj Burrow (AUS), 30, current ASP World No. 3, survived a photo finish against Adrian Buchan (AUS), 26, in the last Quarterfinal of the day. Requiring a score with 20 seconds left, Burrow declined the jet-ski assist to the line-up, optioning to sit in front of Kirra Point instead.
“I could not find a wave,” Burrow said. “The tide was filling up and I just panicked. I behind the eight-ball for most of the heat. I got kind of a keeper towards the end and my only option was to sit down the end at Kirra Point. A little slab came through and I took off late and it barreled for me and I got a little pump in to squeak out. I definitely threw a little claim in there because I was pretty sure I got the score.”
Burrow’s score of an 8.33 out of a possible 10 on the final wave of the day secured his Semifinals berth, but perhaps gave the Western Australian a confidence boost to go all the way this season. Long thought to be Australia’s heir apparent to the ASP World Champions’ Throne, Burrow has failed to secure professional surfing’s ultimate prize, but today’s performance could have set him on the path to glory.
“That ASP World Title is the plan for sure,” Burrow said. “I’m doing what I can to make it possible, so I have to tell myself that.”
Burrow will now face an in-form Adriano de Souza (BRA), 22, in Semifinal 2.
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 9am at Snapper Rocks for a possible 10am start.
The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast will crown a champion tomorrow, and up first will be the local showdown between Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson in Semifinal 1.

Joel Parkinson Claims Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Solid Conditions at Kirra
KIRRA, Australia (Wednesday, March 11, 2009) – Joel Parkinson (AUS), 27, has won the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by LG Mobile, defeating fellow finalist Adriano de Souza (BRA), 22, in solid six-to-eight foot (3 metre) surf at Kirra.
After a 12-year hiatus, today’s action brought the ASP World Tour back to Kirra for the Finals of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. Whilst it was not classic Kirra, the challenging conditions at the historic pointbreak offered churning barrels with massive scoring potential.
Parkinson, winner of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in 2002, was fearless from the outset in the hard-fought Final, collecting an excellent 8.83 out of a possible 10 on his opening ride, breaking his board in the process.
“That first wave was a good one but I came down funny on the floater and buckled my board,” Parkinson said. “I came in and just got energized when I heard the score and everyone on the beach really pumped me up. The crowd is awesome. There are so many people. Down here you don’t really see it, but from the water you can see the crowd on the hill and all along Coolangatta and even down Kirra Point. I could hear them roaring – it was amazing.”
The hometown favorite would return to the lineup to collect a bevy of high scores, including a 7.50 and an 8.17, before nailing his second perfect 10 of the day, pushing his heat total to an unsurpassable 18.84 out of a possible 20.
„I was thinking it has been a long time between drinks [ASP World Tour event wins],” Parkinson said. “Until the hooter blew, I didn’t know what emotion to feel. It’s the kind of thing where you’re surrounded by a lot of people and it’s not until you pull yourself back and you’re together with family and friends, that’s really when you feel all of your emotions. Right now I’m on a high and I’m buzzing, it will be a few hours to let it all sink in.“
Parkinson now sits atop the ASP World Tour ratings, in excellent position for his 2009 campaign for the ASP World Title.
“There’s still a long way to go and there are a lot of dangerous surfers out there,” Parkinson said. “I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. It is a long year with a lot of stops [on the Dream Tour]. It is going to be a great year.”
De Souza, former ASP World Junior Champion and into his first Final ever in an ASP World Tour event, was unable to find a rhythm against Parkinson, only grabbing a 7.00 out of a possible 10 as a noteworthy score.
“I saw Kirra break a couple of years ago but I am too young to have seen it break like it has in the past,” De Souza said. “These are the best waves so far during my time in Australia. I am really glad with everything. Second Place for me is an amazing result. I will just keep trying to do the same thing at the next event.“
Despite not claiming the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, De Souza’s Runner-Up finish today sees him rocket to No. 2 on the ASP World Tour ratings, putting himself in excellent position for the season ahead.
„It was my first Final ever so I’m happy and glad with my performance,” De Souza said. “I will just try to keep focused and determined for the rest of the year. It is amazing for me. It is a big thing that has happened in my life this Final.“
Mick Fanning (AUS), 27, former ASP World Champion (2007) and two-time past winner of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast (’05, ’07), surfed the heat of the event this morning, narrowly going down to Parkinson, 19.93 to 17.66.
“Cyclone Hamish turned it on for us,” Fanning said. “It’s one of those days where you can have one of the best surfs of your life or one of the worst surfs of your life. It wasn’t the best surf of my life, but it was definitely up there.”
The incredible conditions provided the ideal forum for the two locals to raise the performance bar, and while the lead flip-flopped several times throughout the Semifinal, it was Parkinson’s perfect 10 that would nail the coffin shut.
“I didn’t see Joel’s 9.90 but I saw his 10,” Fanning said. “When his head popped out, I knew. I said to myself I would give that a 10. Congratulations to him, he surfed an awesome heat.”
Taj Burrow (AUS), 30, finished Equal 3rd at today’s Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, going down to eventual event Runner-Up De Souza in Semifinal 2.
“I felt really lost at sea,” Burrow said. “It was a total lucky dip, then the wind squall came through and it got even more wild and washed out. Every time a wave came that looked any good, Adriano [de Souza] was sitting next to me with priority. I was just really unlucky. Last time I surfed here, I got a perfect 10 as a wildcard, so I have good memories of Kirra. I would have loved a 10 at the end of that heat. I’m just looking forward to the next event now.”
