GastPEAK SEASON ARRIVES FOR 2005/06 BILLABONG XXL GLOBAL BIG WAVE AWARDS
Surprise Southern Hemisphere Entries, an Early North Pacific Swell
and All-New Event Website Mark „Opening Day“ on West CoastSurfers along the West Coast of North America got an early taste of winter power as the first major northwest swell of the season hit this week. This marked one of the earliest „opening days“ in recent memory and set the stage for the peak months of action in the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards presented by Monster Energy.
While top big wave riders have been chasing huge swells in the Southern Hemisphere since April, most have now positioned themselves in Hawaii, California and Europe as the seasons shift and the intense winter storms get underway in the northern reaches of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Waves in Northern California and Oregon earlier this week reached 30 feet on the face in some locations while extratropical storms in the Atlantic are expected to produce sizable surf as they move off toward Europe.
It has been an exceptional year so far for big wave hunting. With the Billabong XXL Awards running on an annual cycle through the end of March each year, entries from Tahiti, Australia and Chile have already been received, setting an extremely high bar in several event categories. Three massive swells at Tahiti’s Teahupoo reef have produced some of the most spectacular barrel rides ever experienced, and the rarely-seen Cyclops break off of Western Australia has likewise produced worthy contenders for the Monster Tube Award. In the Monster Paddle category, a huge swell in Chile resulted in some of the biggest waves yet challenged in the Southern Hemisphere. Currently, the unofficial leader in the Monster Paddle Award division would appear to be Chilean local Diego Medina, who was photographed by Philip Mueller at Punta de Lobos riding a wave on par with the best at more famed venues like Hawaii’s Waimea Bay.
The renovated BillabongXXL.com website for 05/06 is now live with images of these amazing rides, and is being constantly updated as new entries are received. This week’s swell is expected to produce some additional entries in the coming days. Action from the past five years of the big wave competition can also be accessed though the site’s XXL archive feature.
Typically, the biggest waves of the year occur from mid-November through early March. Last year’s unlimited XXL category (which allows the use of jet powered watercraft to tow invited surfers into waves too big to catch by paddling) was won by Dan Moore of Hawaii who caught his 68-footer at Jaws on Maui last December 15. Moore received the Billabong XXL prize of $68,000—or $1000 per foot for the feat. The prior season the same break produced a world record 70-foot XXL winner for Maui’s Pete Cabrinha. In previous years the XXL Award has been won at Maverick’s near San Francisco and at the Cortes Bank 100 miles off Southern California. Other XXL nominees have come from diverse locales around the globe such as Belharra Reef off France and Ghost Tree, a recently-conquered break off the famed golf course in Pebble Beach, CA.
