Hi,

Best Beginner Surf Breaks on Oahu
There are plenty of places to surf on Oahu, but not all of them are for beginners. No matter where you go there will be a local crowd that doesn’t really like newbies or kooks coming to their favorite spot, but there are some surf breaks that are better than others for beginners.

Canoes – Waikiki
First up is Canoes in Waikiki. This is probably the most popular beginner surf break in the islands, especially on Oahu. There are multiple surf rental and lessons available within eyesite of this break. The waves are usually a nice rolling wave and the bottom is relatively sanded or worn down reef (but please don’t stand on it to wear it down more).
There’s the local crowd here, but for the most part, if you stay inside, you won’t get bothered by them and can catch a few waves any day you’re out there. However, don’t get this wave confused with Queens, that’s a lot more locals and you’ll surely get yelled at.
How to tell the difference between Queens and Canoes? Well, aside from battling out you can stand at the Duke statue and look out at the ocean. At about 11 o’clock from the statue is Queens, 1 o’clock is Canoes.

Pua’ena Point Surf Break – North Shore
Pua’ena Point Beach Park has a great surf break for beginners if you’re staying on the North Shore. You can head into Hale’iwa and stop at Surf’n’Sea right on the way in at Hale’iwa Beach Park. They’ll have rentals available there and let you know if it’s a good time to go out.
The surf break here is to the right of the small island if you’re looking out at the ocean. You’ll want to stay on the inside if you’re just beginning as the current and waves can get pretty strong the further away from shore you get.

Diamond Head – South Shore Oahu
Another good spot on the south shore of oahu for beginners to surf is at Diamond Head Beach Park. If you take the path down from the main walkway you’ll want to walk all the way past the shower to the left towards the houses. If you go straight out, you’ll find yourself over a lot of reef.
Once you get all the way down to where the last few people are surfing you’ll notice the reef finally goes away. This is down by Mansions. If you stay on the inside and to the left (surfers right) it should be pretty deep and provide continuous little rollers. Caution, surfers going left could put you over some reef, and heading out too far can be a bit dangerous. Stay inside and surfers stay right.

Enjoy.
