Surfing in the “Nordeste do Brazil”

Plus: all levels of surf (from normal waves in Natal to big-tubes waves
in Fernando de Noronha), all types of surf all year long (surf, wind,
body, kite), the Brazilian life-style, very low budget, water
temperature;sun for more then 320 days a year;no urban violence

Minus: lack of reef-breaks, not many wind/kite surf-infrastructure
(shops, schools, …)

We present you two different places out of the
„known surf travel destinations“ that will attracts very soon
all the adventurous surfers:

RIO GRANDE DO NORTE – Natal
(surf/wind-surf/kite-surf): 28 different spots all along 100 Km of beach

ISLA FERNANDO DE NORONHA
(surf, for experts): 11 different spots on the island

Both with great climate conditions:

tropical

annual average air temperature of 27°C

annual average water temperature of 25°C

not less then 320 sunny days/year

Rio Grande do Norte is a very particular surfing state in Brazil: he
didn’t have the South swells

the east coast is subject to the direct impact of the South East
tradewinds all year long

the coast is fronted by shallow waters

beaches are characterized by sand dunes

spots are not crowdy at all

climate is regular all year long (tropical, very close to Equator)

All these conditions allow all kind of surfing on the coast:

SURF: big surf is rare, but during November-March (with the North
swells) there are plenty of 3-6′ days.
The rest of the year (April to October) surf will range from 1-3′.
The quality of the breacks is good to excellent. Tide is an important
factor.
Natal is probably Brazil’s best continental option during the North
swells:
– is more consistent of Fortaleza
– is less crowded and with more days of very good surf time the the
South of Brazil

WIND/KITE SURF: South East tradewinds are constant all year long: from
12 to 18 knts.
Best wind season is August to September.
Beaches outside Natal are divided (all year long) only with
some fishermen and, in the south, with dolphins.
Many places to discover.

Fernando de Noronha ( 30W 3,5S), is known by Brazilian surfers as the
Brazilian Hawaii because the waves are of international class and breaks
at the same season as Hawaii (November-March).
The north shore of the island receives the brunt of North Atlantic
ground swells, and easily reaches 8 feet on the face, with waves of 10
feet or bigger on the face not uncommon. The SE trade winds blow
offshore all day long making the waves break hollow and glassy.
The result: barrels, barrels, and lots of barrels; no flat days, never
smaller then 2′; the
swells come up at night lasting an average of 5-6 days
The water colour remembers a swimming pool and there’s a lot of fish and
marine birds flying around everywhere.
Fernando de Noronha is one of the most beautiful islands in the world
and is also the perfect romantic getaway for surfing couples. The diving
and the snorkeling are world class with awesome visibility and marine
life and there are several dive shops and operations on the island.

there are plenty of 4-8′ days
and some few bigger days. The rest of the year (April to October) surf
will range from 3-4′.
The quality of the breacks is good to excellent. Tide is an important
factor.
Fernando de Noronha is probably Brazil’s best option during the North
swells:
in January also the PRO are there with their contest: HANG LOOSE PRO
NORONHA.
